Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky Endorses Democrat Giannouliasfor Secretary of State
Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky endorsed Alexi Giannoulias today for Illinois Secretary of State.
In announcing her support, Schakowsky, who has represented Chicago’s North Side and northern suburbs since 1999 and serves as a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, cited Giannoulias’s record of support for working families, protecting voting rights and plans to modernize the Secretary of State’s office.
“Alexi is a true Democrat who has fought for middle-class values and working families throughout his career,”Schakowsky said. “He has a tremendous amount of support across the state, including with many of my sisters and brothers in organized labor.”
“This election is critically important as Republican Secretaries of States across the country are implementing extreme right-wing policies that amount to the worst voter suppression effort since Jim Crow,” said Schakowsky, who has been a fierce advocate of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in Congress. “These underhanded tactics are solely aimed at suppressing the vote, particularly among voters of color, and restricting access to the ballot box. Even in Illinois, partisan legislation has been proposed to create barriers designed to keep people from exercising their right to vote. As Secretary of State, I trust Alexi to advocate to protect these fundamental rights and make it easier for people to register and cast ballots.”
“I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of Congresswoman Schakowsky who has led the fight for progressive values and is one of the most dedicated and passionate public officials serving our State,” Giannoulias said. “Congresswoman Schakowsky has been a tireless champion for women’s rights, affordable healthcare, immigration reform and gun violence prevention and has fought for working families throughout her career and I’m extremely proud and excited to have her supporting my campaign.”
